While looking through decorating magazines, one often spots pots and pans racks that hang down from a kitchen ceiling.
Have you seen the prices they command? They are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. Some even cost more than $1000, which is way out-of-reach for our household.
While very grateful for our pantry, storing all the pots and pans as well as their covers in one of the cabinets, turned out to be very inconvenient. Whenever it was time to cook, it would require going into the pantry to rummage through the jumble of pots and pans to select the right ones. To say the least, it was a daily lesson in patience, not to mention putting up with lots of banging noises every day.
Some nights, rather than face the jumbled pantry shelf, the pots would get stored on top of the stove and look like this:
So I asked my husband, who can do just about anything around the house, if he would build some kind of a wall rack for the pots, pans, and covers.
Because the kitchen is not a huge space, and a ceiling rack would be attractive but not very practical, I was willing to settle for something against the wall at the bottom of a staircase, right off the kitchen.
First, my handy hubby went to Home Depot and bought a big piece of plywood which he cut down to size to fit against the wall.
Along the bottom of the plywood, he nailed in a piece of three-quarters thick plywood and painted it, making a very clever holder for pot and pan lids.
He also bought gray hooks which he then spray painted black (since I totally dislike gray.) He painted the plywood white and then I helped him carry it in. He used screws to attach it to the wall. Then he drilled the hooks into the plywood.
It's so much more convenient now to grab a pan and lid off the wall, instead of rummaging through the pantry cabinet. It's not fancy, like one of those holders hanging from the ceiling, but it suits our kitchen just fine.
P.S. Looking at the condition the pots and pans are in, I'm determined to get an entirely new set after the holidays. Maybe all the ones shown in the photo will be put outside on the strip of lawn near the street in front of our house with a "FREE" sign. They'd be good for camping!
