A "mała lalka," or Polish doll, has joined the household.
She was found on a shelf in a Goodwill Thrift Store.
Despite promising to refrain from buying any more dolls, it was virtually impossible to leave this little beauty behind.
After all, she depicts my mother's heritage, Polish.
She is dressed in a colorful outfit, complete with little black boots.
There is lovely embroidery on her skirt and a black and white slip underneath.
Her blonde braids are tied with red bows.
She is so "ładny" (pretty).

Yes I have several things from my trip to Poland with my two adult children and aunt ten years ago. I have a Polish doll also. Statues and pictures of the Black Madonna and salt from a salt mine that we toured. Also a beautiful warm wool sweater made by a Polish lady we met.
So how did you know she was Polish? How much. And boy there was a lot of detail on that little doll. Very pretty.

I have Polish and German roots from my dad's side, and German roots from my mother's side.
In answer to your question, when I think about it, I do not have anything ethnic sitting in my house to represent my heritage. It was never emphasized by either side of my family when I was growing up. My grandparents and dad came to Canada (when he was little) and they strived to fit into Canadian society. They didn't bring over much in the way of costume. However, they did speak German amongst themselves, a mix of German/English, so I learned to understand a little bit. Also the food we ate: many recipes from the 'old country' went around the grandmas' aunties' kitchens of tortes and kuchens, cabbage rolls and dill pickles, beef stew with dill, that sort of thing. I guess that would be what represents my heritage.

Your Polish doll got to me right away, Susan, cause I have a small Polish doll too. Yours is cute, and I love her blonde braids, green festive outfit, and embroidered skirt. I have four of these quaint dolls to go with my heritage.....a Greek doll, Polish, Spanish, and French Canadian. : )
