Precious Peonies

Peonies always make me think of my late paternal grandmother.

She grew some beauts of that flower in her yard.

Their fragrance was divine and their big, soft petals came in many different shades including deep cranberry, pink, and white.

One thing we knew never to do was to inhale their scent close to the petals.

Peonies tended to be ant hotels.

So when I saw a bouquet of peonies on my daughter's table, I warned her.

"No problem here," she said.

She soaked the peony blossoms upside down in water overnight!

Any ants inside their petals were long gone.

I thought that was a novel idea and cut several white as well as cranberry colored peonies from the front yard.

They got an overnight dip and were dried on some pieces of newspaper.

Voila!   It worked. Gorgeous, fragrant peonies with no ants were the result!

 Grandma would be proud.

I do not have them where I live and I love them. I remember them from when I was a little girl. Also remember the ants. Your blooms are beautiful.

Your peonies are looking lovely! And yes, we have peonies in our region. They are one perennial that hardly ever fails to come up every spring. Very hardy to our climate. They'll start pushing their green noses through early in the spring. Our peonies are getting ready to bloom soon - buds are swelling and hints of colour break through the tight balls. Soon and very soon, and we'll have those deliciously scented bouquets too.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend, Susan.

That was smart of your daughter to think of that, Susan. The Peonies are so pretty. And I'm noticing the lovely vase you put them in. It looks big and sturdy. Peonies were one of my cousin's favorite flowers. We were the same age and she passed away, but she was my favorite cousin. These reminded me of her. They sure do look lovely on your table.
