Mama and Baby Bunny

(Got this sweet little Mama Bunny and Baby at a yard sale for $1.00!)

"Mommy, will you read to me?"

How many of us have heard those words coming from the mouths of our kids? I'd venture to say most of us have heard the plea and answered it.

Reading is a life-long pursuit and hobby. Love of reading begins early in childhood.

My mother instilled a love of reading in all my siblings and me. While she rarely read aloud to us, she took us to the library weekly where we always walked out with fresh stacks of precious books. We'd see my Mom reading, too. Leading by example is a powerful learning tool.

For the rest of my life, no matter how difficult the times were financially, going to the library and getting new books always made me feel rich. The difficult times would pass, but the love of reading never did, thank goodness! Even today, it's easy to have a "smorgasbord" of books going at the same time. I'll read from one, put a bookmark in it, pick up another and take a "bite" out of it, and so on! It's a "delicious" past time!

Reading to children is immensely important, too, and helps instill a sense of love for the written word. I read to my children even before they were born! My son and daughter each had their own library of childrens' books in their rooms. They were rich in books and in the love of reading.

When your child or grandchild asks you to read to them, never pass-up the ability to inspire.

Books bring stories to life. Vivid images can jump off the page of a well-written book. Children who are good readers will do well in most school subjects. That's a good impetus to encourage reading.

When you hear a little one say "Can we read?," let her get comfy on your lap; enjoy your warm, beating heart; and snuggle close.

Then, let the reading begin!

WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOK FROM CHILDHOOD?

I can't remember my favorite childhood book..there were too many. I know I loved reciting nursery rhymes at 18 months old. Reading was passed down to my children from an early age too. We all love to read in my family! Cute bunnies Susan.xo

That looks like a Beatrix Potter figure. Is it marked on the bottom? I have twelve Potter figures that I started buying for my Dad when I was about 25 (I'm 64 now - do the math) Some of them are worth upwards of $300.00.

I started reading when I was 3 and will read anything! - even a cereal box. If a storm is heading in, other folks head to the grocery store, I head to the library.

...and yes - it was my mother who got me reading. Every week we would walk to the library for a fresh stack of books. Hmmmm - did we have the same Mom??

My favorite Golden books were "The Taxi That Hurried" (I have my hubbys copy) and "The Little Engine That Could." By ten I was reading stuff like the Caine Mutiny...

Not from my childhood, but my own kids childhood - Mickey Mouse and The Haunted House. Not because there was so much knowledge in there - just that my kids loved that book - no matter how many times we read it to them. Over and over again. They actually squealed with delight. Every body read it to them. I remember them setting on my mom's lap (tears here) and she read it to them too. Silly, but I really am tearing up. I miss my mom...

My grandson has dyslexia - and it's hard for him to read easily. Of course he is getting tutored and is getting much better - and we read to him all the time too.

Love how you find something to blog about - tell a little story - and then ask a question.

Love your blog! Mutual admiration society!

Hi Susan. I also thought the bunny statue looked like a Beatrix Potter, but I couldn't think of the name at the time I was typing! And as far as my favorite book from childhood, gosh, that is so hard to pick just one! We didn't have a library that was near when I was young, so I received lots of Golden Books for birthday and Christmas gifts, etc. Okay....favorite book, from really young age, was a book abouta little girl named Katrina, from another country. I always read to my kids, too, and now to the grandkids! Reading is happiness!

I love to read and always have. My Mother tells the story of how I toted around my little golden books and made everyone read to me over and over and if they tried to skip pages I told them no, go back. I read to my children all the time and they both love reading. I always have a book and can't imagine life without books. The library was my friend all my life. Great Post!
