Walking at Sunset

The air felt cold and snow crunched beneath shoes. Winter, still very much in season, held its tight grip on the village.

It was dusk as I walked near an old church. All that was left of the sun was a strip of golden sky at the horizon. Soon, all would be dark and frigid.

Glancing up to the top of the church, a cross formed a silhouette in the sky. A shaft of hazy light hovered in a streak above it, as if the cross was being lighted by a beam from heaven.

Dim lights illuminated the stained glass windows of the church from inside. Outside, they showed reflections of leafless trees.

A building near the church had smooth marble columns on a landing at the top of steps. It was unique architecture, quite ornate and pleasing to the eye.

Dusk settled quickly in the little village. Savoring the last, lingering moments of light, a flock of birds flew in formation in the sky above the church. The only sound was the flapping of their wings.

For that moment in time, as evening chill froze the fingertips, all was very right with the world.

What do you prefer? Sunrise or sunset?

The most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen are in Arizona and on the California coastline. I think I love sunsets the best...don't have to get up early to see them..ha ha.

Ha! Good point, Di. It is nice to see the sunsets. I have to agree with you that the most glorious ones I've ever seen were in Arizona. The entire sky'd light up with gold, peach, red, pink, and apricot! Astounding beauty! Take care and have a great day! Always, Susan

In the morning, I'd have to say "sunrises!" In the evenings, it would have to be "sunsets!"

I'm a little partial to Kansas sunsets! Maybe because the part we lived in was so flat, it seemed I saw more beautiful sunsets in Kansas than anywhere else we've lived....

Ha! Rebecca, you crack me up. I guess I'd have to agree with you, though. In the morning, I like sunrises, too, and in the evenings, sunsets are great. Good one! Sincerely, Susan

I'm with Rebecca - although around here the sunsets are particularly fabulous. This time of year we start getting the brilliant orange and red sunsets.

I meant to ask - where is the church? Inquiring minds really need to know these things...:-)

I like sunsets - I think I'm able more to relax at night - when I get up in the morning I feel I have to get up and go!

I do go to Alaska last summer and it was sunny all the time - and I loved that.

So maybe I like both!

Hi Adrienne...The church is in a little town called Lenox, Massachusetts. So happy to see you came to visit! Hope all is well. Sincerely, Susan

Lovely pictures of the church. Your Grandmother Cat caught my eye, as my Dexter looks exactly like her. My cats are strictly indoor cats only, but tonight Dexter escaped and I had a GRAND time trying to find him and catch him in the dark. This was the first time that he has EVER had a little dirt on his feet and he's soon to be 5 years old. He seems happy to be safe in the warm house now...until he gets that urge to check out the great outside world again.

Lovely post! I prefer sunsets as I am not a morning person. But on those days when I do arise early and the house is very, very quiet, then sunrise is the most beautiful part of the day. Sending many blessings your way. :) Tammy

Hello Andrea....Oh, I'll bet Dexter is a sweetie pie, if he's anything like Honey Cat. Looks like he's itching to explore the outside! In summertime, Honey Cat thinks she's Queen of the Neighborhood. I worry about her, though, because, well, she IS getting on in years. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Sincerely, Susan

Hello Tammy...Hey! I just checked out your blog and love it. So much to learn there and read about! I just signed on as one of your followers! What are you doing in Kuwait? Is that too personal to ask? Such a different place to be! I would imagine you have a lot of adventures. Anyway, I send blessings to you, too, Tammy. So happy when you come to visit! Sincerely, Susan
