For Dayle's Simple Pleasures Blog Party: Sparkling Clean Windows

Sparkling clean windows add to a home's appeal. They are one of life's simple pleasures.

There's little I dislike more than looking out a dirty window. Maybe this developed from observing my maternal grandmother when I was a child. At Easter time, before we could even begin cooking and baking, all the windows in the house had to be washed until they sparkled.  When that task was completed, out came the flour and mixing bowls.

Today, after the long, hard winter in New England, the windows of our house badly need cleaning. All the snow and ice storms leave their marks on glass windows.

One day, quite recently, my husband agreed to help me wash the windows in the dining and living rooms. There are five combined large windows in those two rooms.

This year, I tried something new to clean. It was a mixture of about a cup of hot water, a squirt of  Dawn dish detergent, and a  half cup of white vinegar.

Wow, wow, wowsers. All I can say is that mixture took off the dirt and grime in two seconds flat. Then the windows were dried. They are so sparkling clean it's hard to even tell there's glass in the windows!

Cranberry glass pieces have been lined up along the upper windowsill in the living room. With the sun coming through them, they look quite stunning and even help bathe the room in soft, pink light.

If I had my druthers, or, I should say if I had a lot of money, washing windows would be one chore relegated to a professional window washing company. Since that's not possible, I have to say my husband and I did a pretty bang up job. Those newly cleaned windows sparkle like diamonds.

Having nice clean windows truly is a simple pleasure of life.

Why not hop over to Dayle's blog, A Collection of This and That, http://alittleofthisandthat2.blogspot.com/    and check out all the other simple pleasures? Her blog button is in the sidebar, too!

I have heard of a similar mixture for cleaning windows and my Mother used it and newspapers for drying them! Worked really well too! Yes, that is definitely a Simple Pleasure.

You are right, clean windows are a joy. I rarely have them as we have 3 nine foot panels of glass in the lviing room covered by a second layer. I can not reach the windows well and not way I can take those panels off or even help. My arms won't spread to hold them.DH has to use a tool to get them off and find a helper to hold the plates. Whew..then streaking...well, I take what I can get when I can get it. But I do the sliding glass doors in back myself...yes a joy when they clean. Your pictures of your windows are like little poems!

Your windows look beautiful! I love sparkling windows too; one day, when I have a house of my own, I'll scrub 'em every month!

Susan, I love, love, LOVE that pink glass in that sparkling window. The light is magical. I told The Man, after reading your sparkling window post (the earlier one) that I needed his help with a project, as soon as we get a cool front come through--cleaning windows!

Love having you at this party!

Well.... I do feel a little guilty for taking a fall cleaning break to enjoy the simple pleasures of blogland for a few minutes.

That said, I agree heartily and generally leave the LAST thing in a good cleaning for the windows. Then, I clean them, stand back, and do the "ahhhhh".

Great simple pleasure!

Thank-you,

Oh, Susan, I'm so with you. I hate looking out a spotty window. I grew up having to help clean windows every spring and fall, and I still do it. And we used vinegar water, which I still use. Your cranberry glass pieces are gorgeous!!

Hi Susan, Don't you just love the sun streaming through cranberry glass? Your pictures are lovely. Your wispy curtain adds the romantic touch to the photo. Not to mention the heart shaped cranberry dish. I have been collecting cranberry glass for a long time and I have never seen such a dish. It is adorable. I bet it looks perfect on Valentine's Day filled with chocolates! mmm... Your dolls are also beautiful. I love the porcelain faces and the hand painting that goes into each one. Great posts! *hugs*

Hi Susan! Thanks for the inside cleaning tip! I will definitely be trying that out --- since everything else I've used just doesn't do a good enough job. I couldn't believe how clean your windows look! Hey - have a great holiday weekend!

Susan, I just copied and pasted that window cleaning solution so I'll remember it next time I do windows. I'm usually a "squirt the windex bottle" cleaner, but you have inspired me to try this solution - your windows are GORGEOUS and so crystal clear!

Your cranberry glass is beautiful. It's so pretty with the sparkling clean window behind it. That reminds me - someone needs to clean our windows - inside and out. I'm always so much happier when they're sparkling clean. Right now, they are not.

Applause! Applause! What a beautiful sight.
I THINK I'm seeing pink woodwork, right?

I copied the formula, too. Do you use rags, paper towels or newspapers?

Susan said...

Hi Rebecca! Yes, you definitely see pink woodwork. It matches the pink fireplace! Ha!

I use paper towels to wipe down the windows. And I use only one brand....VIVA. They are the best! Love, Susan
