For Dayle's Simple Pleasures Party: Fresh Corn on the Cob

One of the absolutely yummiest simple pleasures of life is freshly picked corn-on-the-cob.

Sweet, tender, and juicy, it makes a perfect summer supper in and of itself. Accompany it with some fresh tomato slices, mozzarella cheese, and a few basil leaves, all sprinkled with good olive oil and vinegar and wow, it's a treat fit for royalty.

In Central America, corn on the cob is often grilled and served with lime wedges and chili powder. It's really delicious that way, too, and provides a totally different taste.

As children, my father treated us to more delicious ears of corn than I could ever count. He'd go out into his huge garden and pick a big bucketful of corn. Meanwhile, inside the house, Mummy would boil water in a big pot.

As soon as the corn was shucked, into the pot it would go. A few minutes later, a mound of fresh corn on the cob became supper. Slathered with butter and a sprinkling of salt, it tasted absolutely divine.

Still does! It's one of summer's simple (yet fabulous) pleasures!

I like mine grilled. I add butter, salt and pepper and usually some fresh herbs, whatever I have growing. Yummy!

I know for every one who is afraid of microwaving and especially microwaving with plastic, this will not be appetizing to you BUT

the best way I have EVER had corn is to put it in a ziploc bag, microwave for 50 seconds--turn it over and cook on over side for 75 seconds--oh my, it was so incredibly delicious--btw, do not seal the baggie if you try this--

an incredible simple pleasure!

Corn, like you had, picked while the water is boiling! Makes all the difference in the world.
I like mine with butter and salt and pepper! Yellow and white, my fave!

I simply love fresh corn, on or off the cob. I generally cook it off the cob, with lots of black pepper! A wonderful simple pleasure, for sure.

Always so nice to have you at the Simple Pleasures party, Susan.

I love the whole idea of simple pleasures,we should be so appreciative of them all. Corn on the cob or off it is wonderful when fresh! I have a friend with a farm that gives me some every year! Last year I made corn relish for the first time!

Yes! grilled and served with lime wedges and chili powder is a way to eat it around here! and it's popular in our "asados" = bbqs. Salt and pepper, or plain with nothing, is also a good way to eat it. I love corn!!
have a great day!

What IS it about fresh corn on the cob that makes you feel as if you are enjoying some kind of treasure? I guess it's because it's not that available during the rest of the year.

I can't ever stop at just one if two (three...) are available. I very much agree that it is one of life's simple pleasures!!

I love fresh corn. I can hardly wait for it all summer and I eat it for as long as I can.
I also really like popcorn.

I'm drooling right now! My favorite was my grandfather's corn - pick, shuck, boil, slather, MUNCH! We don't have enough land for a garden so I stick with any corn I can find! I must say, we were spoiled the 3 years we lived in Nebraska. Don't think we'll ever have corn that yummy again!

ooooh - lime juice and chili powder sounds divine! never even heard of that.

In Maine, we would often eat sweet early summer corn for dinner, when we were just newlyweds. Just aalt and the sacrificial stick of butter to roll your ears in...yum.

I LOVE Corn on the Cob - When I was pregnant I ate 10 ears in one sitting - no one will ever let me live that down!

I love it with butter, and a little salt and pepper. Like Dayle said, I sometimes cut it off the cob to cook it. Anyway it's wonderful.

Susan,
I have had corn on the cob microwaved and it is good but I really prefer it fresh into the pot of boiling water and slathered with butter, salt and pepper. One of my favorite kind of sweet corn is the Silver Queen! Good Simple Pleasure!
