Today on this blog are photos of a supermarket splurge: hyacinths.
With the fiercest winter on record slowly receding into past history, (please?), every fiber of my being is yearning for spring. There are no crocuses sticking their heads up from the earth because it's still covered with several feet of snow.
No buds on the trees since it's still freezing outside!
There are no farmers markets to go to and no fresh peaches.
However, all is not lost. In the supermarket, they had hyacinths, 3 for $10. It was a huge splurge for me but I did it anyway----put those babies right into the shopping cart before any food ever hit the bottom.
It was worth it, too. These flowers make me happy just looking at them.
They sit bravely on the chilly kitchen windowsill, looking out toward the snowy backyard and occasional sun. They are three beauties in white, pink (my fave), and purple.
According to the Internet's "The Flower Expert," hyacinths are very ancient flowers, having been cultivated for centuries. In Victorian flower language, they symbolized sport or play and blue hyacinths, sincerity.
They grew in Europe at the time of the Greeks and Romans and Homer and Virgil remarked on their sweet fragrance.
So, to celebrate the eventual coming of spring, as well as this blog's 500th post TODAY, woo hoo, I'm sharing photos of these beauties. Hope you enjoy looking at them!

These flowers are lovely. Thanks for sharing. I might have been tempted myself if I saw them. I am working hard on not being in stores and not "seeing" thigns right now. Soon...soon...I tell myself. Even my huge poinsettia is looking at me, shedding leaves all over the place asking where spring is...soon, soon....
Thanks for help with the recipe. I must gather the ingredients--soon--is there an echo in here?
I have calia lilies in the bedroom...roses and Iris in the other bedroom, a pink hydrangia in the dining room and a yellow mum in the living room. I've never had so many flowers in my house..wow..company is here..no wonder. I love the smell of all of them. Yours are very pretty too Susan.
Hey Susan, those are gorgeous flowers. I was surprised when I visited Shereen the other day to find that her big pot of poinsettias is still going strong. Yes, I adore cats. :) And Hyacinths are some of my favorite spring flowers, but like you -nothing is growing here yet. We did, however, lose all of our snow finally, as we're a bit further south than you, here in east-central Illinois. I too am longing for Spring, but such a nice idea you had to plant some Spring indoors right now. ☼

Happy 500th Post! Your Hyacinths are beautiful, I cant resist them at the supermarket either. Cant decide between the white (so pure) and the blue (my favourite colour), mind you the pink is so lovely too! I would definitely have to have all three!!
