Embroidery: An Ancient Art From From Needle and Thread

Embroidery has been around for centuries.

It's an art form that ties us with all the women from past generations.

It's easy to envision Pilgrim women, far from home, embroidering near their fireplaces during the first few bitterly cold winters in New England.

It's also nice to think about women riding inside stagecoaches, discovering new territory. At night one might very well have found them stitching by the fires their husbands built to keep their families warm.

One of my own very earliest memories from childhood is of my aunt and her friend, who were probably teenagers at that time, embroidering on round hoops.

Once, when they came to visit, we sat under an apple tree in my parents' front yard. Out came the hoops and I was fascinated to see the colored "thread" flowers forming on the white background.

I still love anything embroidered but it's not as popular these days as in the past. Whenever there's an estate sale or linens at a flea market or yard sale, I always admire anything embroidered.

The articles shown in photos today are some that called my name.  They are quite diverse.
When I think of all the hundreds of hours it took to create them,  I cannot help but admire their unknown creators.

DO YOU LIKE EMBROIDERED ARTICLES?
DO YOU THINK THEY ARE PASSE?

I think it is alost art and girls today do not know how to stitch a hem, let alone cross-stitch.

I haven't seen much of this work lately, but I did a lot of towels and pillow cases myself when I was a child. Never ever could do a French Knot though!!!!

I absolutely love embroidered items! I have an embroidery machine, but I learned the hand embroidery from my mother. I buy any embroidered pieces I come across at the yard sales.I do love them.

I'm a big lover of embroidering and embroidery. And, ironically, I plan to show some of my pieces in a post soon. :) If it's passe, oh well ... I fall into that category, too. LOL!

I am sure there are plenty who think it is passe, but I think it is absolutely wonderful and beautiful. I so admire those who are able to work up these lovely pieces. The colors in that last one are so pretty. Handmade is so much better than all the mass produced products of today. Best wishes, Tammy
