Dahlias "Dahling"

Dahlias are very pretty, colorful flowering plants.

Did you know there are 36 species of dahlias?  They are native to Mexico, Central America and Colombia, South America.

They are  cousins to chrysanthemums, daisies and sunflowers.

They are said to be easy to grow and their pretty blooms last through fall.

Deer dislike them but I don't know about squirrels. Does anyone know?

Does this beautiful yellow dahlia make your heart sing?  It does that to me!

Some dahlias are annuals and some are perennials. They are grown from tubers.  In areas where the ground freezes, the perennial dahlias have to be dug up  and replanted in the spring.

My hubs loves dahlias so I went hunting for them in order to give them to him for Father's Day. I found three plants and they all looked different. Thankfully, he loved them all.

(The bright pink flowering plant on the right is a geranium and the other two are dahlias.)

Just for the record, there's even an American Dahlia Society and you can find information about it online.

(Many thanks to Wikipedia and eHow for dahlia information used in this post.)

DO DAHLIAS GROW WHERE YOU LIVE?

I love dahlias, but live in a place where they have to be dug up each autumn. That's something I never seem to get done --- so they don't live long for me. My aunt, who has a wonderful green thumb, grows amazing dahlia's in British Columbia. She is faithful and they thrive under her care. Lovely post. Thanks for the helpful information. I hope you have a "dahlia-tea-ful" day!

Beautiful dahlias! I don't have any dahlias in my garden now. I used to have at my old place. Thanks for the info.
Blessings,

Oh aren't these lovely! Although I don't have any in my garden at present, they do have a special spot in my heart as they remind me of my childhood, and taking tight-fists bouquets from my mom's garden with which to bestow on my school teacher.

Wasn't there an old movie called "The Black Dahlia"? I seem to remember it. I didn't know there were black ones if in fact there are but yours are all so colorful.
