Holiday Decor On-The-Cheap

Today we are joining  Thrifty Things Friday on Diann's blog, The Thrifty Groove.

Stop by there and see some terrific holiday decorating ideas that won't burn a hole in your pocket!

The holidays are a happy, activity-filled time, but can also be quite expensive.

There's the financial strain of buying gifts, wrapping paper and bows, decorations and so forth.

These can all add up and make Christmas anything but merry.

There are ways to economize and still have loads of fun.

Last year, on the day after Christmas, my daughter and I went to Target.

I got fancy colorful bows for pennies, ribbon, tons of wrapping paper, decorative bags for caramel corn (or whatever), and so forth.

The prices were really extremely low---75 percent off, in some cases.

All have been put to good use this year which means saving $$$.

One of my sisters no longer wanted the holiday themed duck tablecloth and was throwing it out so I got it for free!

It's the one shown at the top of this post.

It brightens the kitchen table. Even though I'm not crazy about ducks, the tablecloth suits me just fine and the fact that it was free makes me very happy, indeed.

TELL ONE WAY YOU ARE ECONOMIZING THIS CHRISTMAS.

Buying after Christmas is such a good idea. We are using up all the leftover paper this year. So FREE is good.

Susan, you clever girl! Of course, you seem to have a big house so I bet you have nooks where you can store extras year round. I don't have much room but what I have is stuffed! Your packages look so nice!

I've bought Christmas decorations after Christmas before. You can get really good buys. SOmehow, I don't always remember to do so unless I walk by it in the store.

I have always been a sucker for the after-Christmas sales! This year, I have instructed my husband to tie my hands if I start to buy anything else, though! A few weeks ago, I began to take inventory of the items I have here, and I discovered rolls of wrapping paper that I had forgotten about, and so many Christmas gift bags that I could start my own store!! One great deal I found a couple of weeks ago was at Big Lots, where they had a rack filled with Fall decorations, paper plates, etc., all at 90% off!!! WOW!!! I bought a couple of packs of paper plates with turkeys on them for $.35 each!!! I absolutely LOVE finding such bargains, and wish I could find them every day! That tablecloth you rescued is lovely, even if one is not into ducks specifically. It just has a happy appearance!

Re-purpose, re-use, re-cycle...great way to think of holidays especially since it keeps the meaning of Christmas even more. I love your finds and decor is always heartwarming, XOXO

I never like to use the word ."Cheap!" Thrifty maybe. Good job. Richard from My Old Historic House Blog

We would often carefully open our gifts boxes and wrapping paper so it could be re-used year after year. I now go to the Dollar Store and buy colored tissue paper and put a cute bow or ribbon on it (reused also) to brighten it up. Hugs :O)

This is off the subject, but I love the cranberry color you wrapped your presents in then the usual red.

We are buying less this year - concentrating more on the real reason of Christmas.

We always recycled our christmas paper unwrapped with care and saved till the next year, but this year because the children( thats stretching it my son is 40 and daughter 32 this year and their other half's about the same) will all be away we had secret santa a couple of weeks ago so no real presents this year. It's amazing how much you spend and don't realise it. Christmas dinner will be small this year too but after the holidays are over the beer fair is going up to see his relations in the country for a couple of weeks and I'm off to see my sister at the seaside.

Some of our gifts that are to be given this year have come from resale shops. Still in good condition, too. Others have come from "extreme markdowns." I am always ready to find a bargain! I wish I could find postage stamps to use on Christmas cards on sale.:-) I suppose that's why I like to buy "Forever" stamps.:-)

I have shopped carefully and put a lot of thought into each gift, collecting things and bringing them together as a single gift.
Made candles with teacups, making edible treats.

I've cut down on giving gifts which are expensive and just are giving simple things this year along with a Christmas card and good wishes!

You know I try my best to do everything as thrifty as possible. After Christas sales are my best friends! LOL I buy all my wrap, ribbon, bows and any other Christmas needs in January when they are super cheap. I also buy lots of Christmas gifts throughout the year at cleanrance sales. And I thrift shop a lot of things as well. I am always looking for things that family and friends want throughout the year at yard sales, flea markets and thrifts. One of my favorite thrifty Christmas presents for this year is for my brother. I built a new deck on the back of his house and just finished it late in the summer. He didn't buy new things for it yet. At the end of summer I bought the floor model of a portable bar with two bard chairs for him for Christmas. The 3 piece set was originally $549.00. I got all three pieces for $45.00! He is going to be so excited! thank you for sharing at TTF last week. I hope you are having a fun day!
