To Honor Those Who Fought for Freedom

(I took this photo looking up at the ceiling inside the tower)

There's a huge war memorial tower at the top of Greylock Mountain in Western Massachusetts, built in honor of Massachusetts veterans who fought for freedom.

Here it is shrouded in  heavy layers of fog.

The last visit made there, the entire top of the mountain was immersed in thick fog!

The huge tower has been up there for as long as I can remember.

On a recent excursion to the top of the mountain, there were signs posted that one could no longer go up the narrow stairs to the top of the tower.

It's to undergo renovation this fall.

That was really good news  because the tower really needs a lot of upkeep.

It's a fabulous place, though.

Looking up at the ceiling is worth a trip up the mountain!

I love all the sayings that run all the way along the rim of the walls, too.

Hopefully, all the missing letters will be replaced during the renovation.

All the arcs in the ceiling look like mosaics, too.

Imagine how long that must have taken to complete!

Going to the top of this lovely mountain is always fun with guests. However, I always make it clear that someone else will have to drive.

"I don't drive Mt. Greylock," is always my explanation----too scary. I'm scared enough of heights as it is, let alone driving a car along a hairpin curve on a mountain side. Uh uh.

But once you get to the top, the scenery, on a sunny day, anyway, is quite awesome.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT WITH GUESTS?

Absolutely beautiful ceiling!! Can you only imagine how the artists painted that ceiling??

Some artists have a lot of patience...hence the Sistine Chapel and this ceiling is just as breathtaking. What an eerie site of this monument in the fog honoring those who served, XOXO

I have to tell you Susan that is one of the neatest photos I've ever seen. Reminds me of Europe and the Cathedrals there. It was so beautiful who would think that from the outside?

We have a huge mountain of granite called Stone Mountain here in GA. It takes a couple hours to climb or you can take the tram. They is a carving of the southern generals - the nose are 5 feet long! One of the 8 wonders of the US anyway.

Wow - the painting is amazing - love the detail!!!

We usually go to Valley Forge and the Phila to see all the historical things there as well as heading to Lancaster County to see the Amish.

Happy Thursday!

Most of the folks who come our way are already planning to go to Dollywood, so we normally just meet them at one of the many wonderful restaurants in the Pigeon Forge,TN, area. We have an old theater in downtown Knoxville, TN, that has a lovely domed ceiling, but I don't think there's any historical significance to its creation---just a work of art, I believe. This one is quite meaningful, Susan, and I hope the folks who visit there will truly appreciate the history that dwells there. Thank you for sharing!

Hello from Spain: I really like your photos and that beautiful place. My favorite place is the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims win the Jubilee. Keep in touch
