Yummy Applesauce!




Apples and fall go together like cookies and milk, bees and honey, and babies and love.

So what was going on in our kitchen last weekend?  Applesauce!

Oh yeah. Nothing like a big pot of apples, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla simmering on the stove to fill the house with delicious scent.



I leave the skins on the apples.

Then, when the apple pieces are soft and completely cooked, I pour all the hot mixture into a large strainer over a big bowl.



Stir, stir, stir, until most of the soft apple mixture has fallen through the little holes, leaving the skins behind.

Then, after the mixture cools, I ladle it into containers and freeze it, carefully saving a container to eat later that day.

The containers in the freezer don't last for long, though. 

The applesauce is a great accompaniment to pork chops as well as a yummy snack any time of the day or night. 

It sure beats store-bought applesauce.

Now how do you like "them apples?"

Just did a song about apples and applesauce with my first grades in music today. Now I feel like making applesauce too. It smells so delicious..yum yum!

My students peel apples with a peeler, then we chop the apples and put them in a blender. In less than a minute we have applesauce. They are amazed at the process.

I can smell your kitchen from your pictures, Susan. I want to tell you about a new applesauce I made couple of weeks ago. Apples in skins...cranberry juice in the crock pot! then add dried cranberries at the end. Skin cooks down and this is very tasty and different!

I love your idea about pressing cooked apples through a colander - no pealing! I just made a batch of apple crisp for my son's birthday yesterday (he prefers that to a cake) and used the left over apples to make applesauce. I mix homemade applesauce into my hot oatmeal in the morning. Yum!

I have made applesauce the same way but I have an old food mill that I use. It works just like using the strainer but probably a little faster.

Your applesauce looks so delicious!!!

Yummy applesauce! It sure does make the house smell like autumn. Such simple goodness.

I make applesauce from apples that I get from the house where my mother lived. I feel her there with me when I make it. Tomorrow I will make applesauce cookies using that applesauce and give them to my brother for his birthday on Saturday. He loves to have them with coffee.

In the crock pot! Peels, too. Then I pour into blender and blend it all - peels, too :)

I never have added vanilla. Just might give that a shot...
