Plan Ahead to Enjoy Your Own Party

Summer brings so many good things.

If hot, sticky weather is not to your liking,  at least just concentrate on all the fun get togethers with friends and family.

You can always take refuge in an air-conditioned room when the temps climb too high.

The July 4th holiday is right around the corner.

If you plan, in advance, it takes the stress out of entertaining.

For instance, on Memorial Day last month, a get together had good food and nice company so it was a successful event.

It even turned out to be a dark day and rained torrents so we moved everything inside, lit the candles, pulled out the Bavarian china and managed to have a good time.

We even hauled the barbecue grill onto the side porch to prepare the hamburgers and hotdogs!

All planned in advance, here was the menu that all guests seemed to enjoy:

      * Top quality hamburgers including some studded with bits of
          blue cheese
      * Fruit cup with coconut on the side
      * Carrot sticks with ranch dip
      *Hummus with pita bread triangles
      * All beef hot dogs
      * Cheese and pepperoni tray
      * Chips and dip
      * Homemade oatmeal raisin cookies
      * Water, beer, etc.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH TO SERVE AT SUMMER GATHERINGS?

We are the Queen and King of parties here at our house after hosting numerous events over the years in our tiny home (whereas most people believe you have to have a big space in which to do this, but it really isn't so). We are hosting our annual Summer party this weekend and you are right - planning is the key. I have a list a mile long to accomplish before tomorrow but on the day of the party (Saturday - which lasts all day and night), I know that I will have a great time because of that planning. My menu lists about 20 items - some store bought and most of the others are handmade (which is what I'm doing tomorrow - cooking and preparing!). Also there will be a full bar in our garage party space and we have a covered patio area. I forgo the grill for these large events (20-30 people) because I found that otherwise, when a party is lasting from noon until midnight - someone would have to be married to the grill the entire time and that's no fun, so rather I tend to go with crockpot items like Italian Beef and Sloppy Joes as the main meat dishes and then include salads and vegetable items for the very few (if any) vegetarians who attend our events.

Love your china Susan...ha ha ha. I like to make potato salad when I go to a pot luck. I do not entertain at my own house often at all. The crystal looks lovely too.

I liked everything you served. And the wine glasses holding the silverware is an idea I am going to remember to use. Yes planning ahead is the key! sandie

planning ahead is good but when mother nature throws you a curveball a little improvisation works too.
