Simple Pleasure: Toothpaste for the Pearly Whites

Every Thursday, Dayle, in Texas, hosts Simple Pleasures at her blog, A Collection of This and That.

It is a series of posts that was created by Dayle to remind people "to stop, to look, to listen, to slow down and pay closer attention to the simple things in life."

Here's Writing Straight from the Heart's simple pleasure for this week:

It might seem silly to consider toothpaste a simple pleasure but when you think about it, it really is.

Imagine brushing your teeth without it. Once, when we ran out of toothpaste, I made a paste out of baking soda and used that. In one word, it was "YUK."  My mouth didn't feel a bit fresh after that brushing.

Most people have their own favorite brand of toothpaste.  Throughout the years, I've certainly tried my share of different brands and always come back to good old "regular" Colgate.

By the way, I'm not pushing a product or working behind the scenes for Colgate. It's just that I prefer Colgate over any other brand. It tastes good and does a good job of cleaning teeth.

Have you ever looked at all the brands of toothpaste available in a supermarket?  Holy smokes, a person could get dizzy looking at all the boxes and styles of paste. There's paste with fluoride, paste to make your teeth whiter, paste for sensitive teeth, paste to help your gums, and on and on. It's quite mind-boggling.

Most of us, I think, take toothpaste for granted.  In many Third World countries, however, people don't have access to toothpaste.  Think about that the next time you are squeezing toothpaste onto your brush.

Now that this week's simple pleasure has been shared, think I'll go brush my teeth (with Colgate).

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE BRAND OF TOOTHPASTE?

I can only use sensodine toothpaste as my teeth are highly sensitive....I just found out that Crest is out with a sensitive brand and I'm going to try it. I love to brush and FLOSS my teeth.

Toothpaste is a simple pleasure that often goes unnoticed. I grew up in Africa and remember a time we went 9 months without toothpaste in the stores. And that was back in the 1970's when it took a package mailed from the US about 4 months to reach us. When it did, we sure didn't take that toothpaste for grantid! And we thanked God for it too!!!

What memories! My mother would have us brushing with salt and baking soda when I was a kid (only when we ran out of toothpaste). I really don't mind it much, but do like yummy flavored, creamy toothpaste better. As a child of the 70's, Ultra Brite was the product of choice, 'cause it was cool and hip. LOL! Now that middle age has arrived, Sensodne is a necessity. And how did we get onto this subject? Grin.

We are spoiled for choice aren't we ?!lol!
I think the strangest toothpaste I found in the supermarket, was one with an "appetite suppressant" added to it to help you lose weight!
Made we wonder what else was in those tubes :-(
But I agree, it's a pleasure to use them!

Susan, this post touched my heart! So many people take the little things for granted, like toothpaste, soap, toilet paper etc. If you have never been poor, these things seem just ordinary.
I gained a respect for the simple things in life as a single mother many years ago. I was poor as a church mouse, and there were times I went without alot of what people think are the "necessities of life".
So now I am blessed beyond measure, and I have to take a step back sometimes and breath it all in. God has been so good to me.
So thank you for this post.

We do take so much for granted. I've never thought about toothpaste being a simple pleasure, but I would hate to be without it. Thank you for the reminder to count all our blessings...no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.

Too many choices...too much of everything.

Baking soda, a bit of mint and you have yourself a very good paste.

LOL again your pictures are great! I personally use whatever is on sale and I mix baking soda with it to help keep my teeth white for cheap!

GREAT POST SUSAN!!!

We have TOO MANY choices.

I stood there in Walgreens for 1/2 hour trying to choose a toothpaste.

It is exhausting.

Crazy world we live in.

No wonder we are all craving a simpler life.

*hugs*

Awesome. I can only imagine you taking these photos of toothpaste in the store. :) Good stuff.

And you're right. a fresh mouth after a good brush WITH toothpaste is a blessing we take for granted.

Great post, Susan! That baking soda stuff make-do is just yucky, I agree. (hehe) This post is a reminder of how out of control we've become in the land of retail. Simplify!!

Oh, I DO have a favorite! And it is getting harder and harder to find. I stocked up big time at Walgreens a while ago on Pepsodent! I love the flavor of it because it reminds me of the Wint-O-Green lifesavers my mom used to carry in her purse all the time!... Donna
