Memories of Babyhood---As Time Goes By

Sometimes things that happen unexpectantly boggle the mind.

It's like we have recorders in our brains , and every sight, sound, smell, and thought is recording the minute we experience it.

Then, years later, it can be retrieved in a split second, sometimes when we least expect it.

While shopping in a new  really awesome country store, which I hope to post about in the near future, I saw a couple of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. Suddenly,  I wasn't in the store anymore, but back in a nursery on the second floor of an old Victorian house.

The memories were as clear as day.  We were expecting our first child, a boy. We wanted to know the sex of the baby so we could buy items ahead of time. No one would want to dress a baby boy all in pink or a little girl all in blue, right?

Anyway, I selected Raggedy Ann and Andy to be the theme of the baby boy's nursery.  I had collected those dolls for awhile and had quite a few of them.  They sat in a rag tag manner in the new baby's room.

Even the cover of the the baby book was, guess what?  Raggedy Ann and Andy. One of his first outfits had a decoration of  Raggedy Ann and Andy on the front.

The baby is a grown man now, married, and living far away.  But one look at a Raggedy Ann and Andy  zooms him right back to babyhood in my mind.

So do you think other shoppers in that country store wondered why the lady standing near the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls had tears in her eyes?  (Hope they didn't think I was nuts.)

It's not a crime to be sentimental. I loved holding my little ones in my arms, wishing a world of blessings for them in their lives.

The years zoom by so we must savor each moment. I wish I could tell all new parents that these busy, exhaustion filled years with babies are their best ever. Once they are gone, one can never get them back.

IF YOU ARE A MOTHER, DID YOU HAVE A THEME FOR YOUR BABY'S NURSERY?

When I see Raggedy Ann and Andy, I think of my own childhood! I had at least one of those dolls...don't remember if I had Andy, too. My first son, Scott, had no theme, no particular ROOM for that matter. We traveled so much right after he was born, and when we did finally live in Germany for about a year, he slept in the same room with us! Second son, Mark...his room was kind of a Teddy Bear theme.

My daughter's room was Raggedy Ann and Andy. She still has her dolls. They did not have gender ID when I was PG. I asked the doctor at delivery, "Boy or girl?" and he said , "Yes." I thought I'd had twins!

Good morning
Seeing your Raggedy Andy brings back many memories of my Son Andy. One of our Family friends made him an Andy and he dragged it around for years.. thanks for the memories!

Great memories! I didn't know the sex of either of my babies. The first nursery was done in yellow and green...Winnie the Pooh! I still love that. I waited to do the 2nd nursery and since it was a girl I did it in pink gingham! As the girls grew up they loved Raggedy Ann and Andy, Strawberry Shortcake and anything Sesame Street. I get these nostalgic moments all the time..more now that I have my Grandson! hugs, Linda

I didn't have a theme as much as a color theme.....

But when our youngest daughter was like K-4th grade, we did her room in a Beatrix Potter decor. Found a calendar with Peter Rabbit pictures & framed them; had a lot of bunnies around the room, etc. Some nights she and I laid in bed and counted the bunny rabbits :)

I wish I still had my Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. I do have a rag doll that looks like a Raggedy Ann that I bought at a craft show years ago. She is sitting across the room from me right now. :)

Love those blankets in the baby bed -- all the colors I used to decorate with -- blue and mauve and sage.

I did zoo animals for the kids room once. Trains. Sports/Baseball. Now I am trying to do a Middle Eastern theme but it needs lots of work.

Have a great day. Best wishes, Tammy

I don't remember a theme but Winnie the Pooh was a favorite with my daughter and outer space with my son's room.
