Central American Breakfast

In Central America,  beans and rice are a staple at almost every meal, including breakfast.

As soon as the first rooster of the day crows into the sunrise, coffee pots starts perking, beans and rice start cooking, and soon breakfast, or "desayuno," is served.
Also part of any Central American breakfast are tortillas----rounds of cornmeal, best spread with a little butter and warmed----and fried platanos, which are in the banana family.

Recently, to honor a guest visiting from Arizona, we had a Central American "desayuno."

Of course, ice water with orange slices (lemon, if you have one available, or orange and lemon slices), is part of the meal.

For special occasions, we also serve half-and-half for breakfast coffee instead of regular milk. It makes the coffee taste extra delicious.

From all reports, it tasted "delicioso"  enough to make one want the next rooster to start crowing.

HAVE YOU EATEN FRIED PLATANOS?

What a great breakfast! I don't think I've had plantains, but my students always rave about them! Love how beautiful your table looks!

Hi Susan, found your blog via another blogger friend and it's charming. My daughter just moved back from NM and misses the food. I'll have to share this with her.
Your fall posts are grand! I love miniatures, so will pop over to the site you shared. Happy Fall!'

Hi Susan! so interesting that you posted something about our meals here in Central America. While rice is important, to be honest, it is not part of our breakfast. Beans are though! We have beans almost in EVERY meal, and are a MUST in breakfast. With tortillas, queso fresco (white cheese), orange juice, coffee...and of course some fried plantains! ahhh...yummy! I eat complete breakfasts only on weekends though. They need the necessary time to be enjoyed; something I don't have during weeks with work :o(
Take care!!
